MISTER HISTORY: If you're in Mr. Collins' first-grade class and you're doing project-based learning on the origins of your hometown, there's nobody better to bring in than Mr. Bob Frei. The kids have been working hard, collecting dates, data and timelines about the history of Beaverton, and Mr. Frei stopped by Monday to lend a bit of his considerable knowledge on the subject. A FEW OF MY FAVORITE WINGS: The annual visit by BES kindergarteners to Dow Gardens' 'Butterflies in Bloom' exhibit is a reliable highlight of every school year. Our kids made the trip Friday and learned all about chrysalises, got hands-on lessons in the different stages of the butterfly's life and, per usual, enjoyed it immensely. #GoBeavers

CTE-SSENTIAL INFORMATION: On May 6, voters will be asked to consider renewing the Career & Technical Education millage they originally approved in 2016. Because it's a renewal, passing the request won't increase your taxes - not one bit. That's just one of the crucial facts you need to know before you vote. So to recharge for the second half, we're hosting the Reading Month Halftime Show. The jewel in the crown will be former Harlem Globetrotter Corey the Dribbler, a baller with an important message. But we'll also have the BES Art Show with student exhibits; Make-and-Take Origami; a Glow Show Reading; and Basketball Skills Stations with Corey and Mr. Fritz. Plus: Snacks! And Drinks! LOOK AT THAT PIE FLY! A packed gym, seven particularly ambitious students and one VERY enthusiastic teacher celebrated the end of the BES Kids Heart Challenge the only way that really makes sense - by slamming pies in the face of Principal Shawna Hartwell. In all, BES raised $3,870 in life-saving donations. Some kids took it easy on Hartwell, gently placing the tin of whipped topping in her face as humanely as possible. One or two wound up like a pitcher and really made the pie splatter. But only fifth-grade teacher Jennifer Harris approached it like a pro wrestler diving off the top rope. Congrats to the top fundraisers (Lincoln Shlese, Georgie Carland, Emma Knake, Noah Hansen, Grayson Revis, Gibson Longstreth and Nora Coppola), all the students who took part, and a good-sport principal who always goes well beyond the job description. (And thanks to the BJSHS poms squad for warming up the crowd with a Little Miss Pep reprise.) #GoBeavers
