CALENDAR CHANGES: With snow days finally behind us (we hope), our schedule for the remainder of the 2022-23 school year is now set. Please be advised that Friday, May 5, is now scheduled as a full day for students. This allows us to finish the school year on June 6, which will be a half-day for students. PLEASE BE AWARE: Per our friends from Beaverton Township, starting Wednesday, April 12th, the southbound lane of M-18 in front of the Beaverton Schools Central Office will be shut down for the installation of a sidewalk that will run from there south to Crockett Road, then west to BJSHS. The middle lane will used as the temporary southbound lane until construction is complete. Drivers should expect congestion at peak times; it may be advisable to consider alternative routes.

THE BIG LEAGUES: Don't forget about tomorrow's baseball showdown against Gladwin at Dow Diamond in Midland. The JVs kick things off at 4 p.m., with the varsity contest to follow. Tickets will be available at the gate for $10. C'mon out and support our teams in the big park. #GoBeavers

NOTED LAGOMORPH CAUSES STIR: When it comes to celebrity greeters, it's tough to top the Easter Bunny. BES students were met on their way into the school this morning by the long-eared hopper, exchanging hellos, high fives and hugs. (SO! MANY! HUGS!) ON COMMON GROUND: Sometimes, people disagree. When you take more than a thousand students, teachers, administrators and staff and put them in the same place for nine months, familiarity will, at times, make for misunderstandings, disagreements and a need for conflict resolution. HOLD YOUR HORSES: Excited about Spring Break? So are we. But students need to remember that it doesn't start until AFTER our half-day on Friday. If you start before then, you need to understand the impact it could have on everybody. At the top of the list: The state requires a set number of school days for our kids, and if a certain percentage of you don't show up, we're in real jeopardy of Friday's session not counting. TESTING DAYS AREN'T FAR OFF: Please be advised of upcoming testing days for students in grades 8-11 on April 12 and 13.

CELLING POINT: Visitors to freshman Science classes Wednesday were treated to the Cell Factory Tour. Tourists were whisked away into a plant cell to learn how each job in the cell is like a job in a factory. Other BJSHS staff and students were invited to take in each of the ten tour stops, where students in the classes shared their knowledge about the different types of cells, the organelles found in a cell and how they all work together to make a product (proteins), much like a factory. #SmallScience #GoBeavers

SAFER EVERY DAY: It’s not always pleasant to ponder, but hoping for the best while preparing for the worst is the only way a responsible school district can operate. Today, Beaverton Schools took another important step toward attaining MI HEARTSafe School certification. A group of teachers and administrators have volunteered to comprise their respective school’s Medical Emergency Response Teams, and today’s drills called for a rapid response to a cardiac event. School MERT teams, along with School Resource Officers and Beaverton Fire Department and EMS personnel, walked through the proper protocols of recognizing a cardiac event, notifying 9-1-1, securing the school building and administering life-saving care until paramedics arrive. Groups in both schools scored well in their scenarios, and it’s a point of pride that not only the MERT squad but almost 40 percent of Beaverton school teachers and administrators are CPR and AED certified. We’ll postgame today’s exercises, make any necessary adjustments and work to get even better. #Striving #GoBeavers

NOTHING LIKE A GOOD BOOK: Reading Month continued in earnest this week at BES. Students in Mrs. Revis' class had a celebrity guest reader in Superintendent Joe Passalacqua, while the school's youngest students enjoyed their best reads with family in the 'Books on the Beach' event. #ReadingIsFundamental #GoBeavers

READING ROCKS! March is Reading month. Yesterday, Mr. Passalacqua had the opportunity to read to a group of our Elementary students. It is apparent that every elementary school teacher is a reading teacher and is essential in helping each student on his/her reading journey. While helping students learn to read, it is also important to create a love of reading. Students who read voluntarily report less negativity about reading than those who are required to read. Parents and families play an important role in helping students become successful readers. Reading at home for at least 20 minutes every day can help children develop strong reading skills. #GoBeavers

WE'VE GOT SPIRIT, BUT TODAY IT'S GREEN: It's St. Patrick's Day. You know what that means. Thankfully, plenty of our BJSHS students took the holiday all the way today and made up for those of us who forgot to dress appropriately. #ABeaverShadeOfGreen

NO ORDINARY CUPPA JOE: Mrs. Wagner's Retail, Marketing and Entrepreneurship students launched the new school store, The Beaver Den, this morning to lines around the corner. Today's menu included coffee, hot chocolate, chai, muffins and bagels. Business was robust and the class got a great look at what retail is like in the belly of the beast. The Beaver Den will be open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and the offerings will expand. #GoBeavers

VENTA DE PULSERAS: The BJSHS Spanish Club is selling hand-woven bracelets - 'pulseras' en español - during lunch this week. The sale was organized through the Pulsera Project, a Fair Trade nonprofit organization that empowers and educates people in the U.S. and Central America by sharing this artistry. Student and teacher volunteers raise funds that benefit fair trade jobs, worker rights, sustainability and education while learning about the culture, lives and struggles of Central Americans. #VamosCastores
