A WORTHY CAUSE: An important heads-up for those attending Friday's home basketball triple-header vs. Farwell. Our National Honor Society students are doing their Coaches vs. Cancer fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. The Coaches vs. Cancer committee has been talking to area businesses to raise donations; these businesses will be recognized during the basketball games this Friday. Committee members will also be available at the games to solicit donations from fans. The JV boys tip off at 4:30 p.m., followed by the varsity girls and varsity boys. Whether you’re a coach, player or fan, you can join us in our fight against cancer. More info on CvC here: https://bit.ly/3Hy53Um

SLOW DOWN AND BE SAFE As students and families settle in for the new semester, officials at Beaverton Schools are cautioning drivers to slow down and pay heed to campus traffic directives. “Traffic during arrival and dismissal can be hectic,” said Superintendent Joe Passalacqua. “You’ve got cars and buses and pedestrians all moving about. You’ve got some less-experienced drivers in that mix. We need everyone - students and adults - to take their time, follow our traffic directions and be patient and courteous.” The district is distributing a map that illustrates the proper traffic flow for student drop-off and pick-up, bus routes and appropriate driving areas for visitors. Passalacqua also cautioned drivers to follow the directions or risk running afoul of the two Beaverton Police Dept. employees who serve as School Resource Officers on campus. “We preach safety on our campus, and we just want drivers and pedestrians to exercise every possible caution, especially in these darker winter months when visibility isn’t as good,” Passalacqua said. “Let’s work together and take care of each other.” To keep up with all things Beaverton Schools, make sure you download the Beaverton Schools app by searching for “Beaverton Beavers” at the iPhone App Store or the Google Play store, and drop by www.beavertonschools.net regularly.

SMARTY PLANTS: Mr. Hitsman's science students had a special guest today in the form of 2015 Beaverton graduate Tabitha Faber, who's completing her Ph.D. in ethnobotany at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Faber spoke to our kids about her focused study of dysphania ambrosioides, also known as epazote or Mexican tea, a plant which has been used as an herb and a medicine, but has also been known to kill people. Through her studies, Faber is working to determine the different varieties of the plant and how they interact with Guatemalan culture. She also discussed her college experiences; the places around the globe those studies have taken her; how plants and cultures interact; what it's like to be a working scientist; and how we have an important relationship with wild plants. It was an impressive, informative visit and a great example of what happens when passion for learning and ambition collide. #BEASuccessStory #GoBeavers

Good afternoon, Beaverton. Our schools are committed to the safety and education of all of our students and staff. We also want to clearly communicate with parents about safety procedures and precautions. This afternoon's lockdown training in both buildings was a critical thinking drill with staff & students. In order to remember training and/or information, it helps if you see it, hear it, AND do it. The students & staff need to perform the drills to understand what they can do. Having this in mind, we need to make sure that all our faculty, staff, and students are prepared when facing a crisis situation. This was a collaborative effort between Beaverton Schools and the Beaverton City Police Department. We ask that you discuss today's drill with your children and let us know if any follow-up is needed. We understand that it can be disheartening and scary for parents to discuss this topic with their kids, especially the youngest ones. Thank you for your understanding and please feel free to call either building if you have any questions or concerns. Sincerely, Joseph Passalacqua, Superintendent
